Adrie van der Merwe serves as Senior Adviser for Governance, Peacebuilding and Fiduciary Affairs within the Akassa Development Programme. She brings more than three decades of professional experience in legal administration, fiduciary governance, conflict-sensitive institutional development, estate administration, and regulatory compliance.
Her professional work focuses on strengthening governance systems, promoting accountability, supporting transparent administration, and advancing sustainable development through effective institutional frameworks. Throughout her career, she has contributed to legal reform initiatives, organizational governance, stakeholder engagement, and the promotion of peaceful and lawful dispute-resolution mechanisms.
Within the Akassa Development Programme, Ms. van der Merwe provides strategic guidance on governance matters affecting community development, institutional sustainability, and stakeholder relations. Her work supports the Programme’s commitment to fostering cooperation among communities, strengthening local institutions, and encouraging peaceful dialogue as the foundation for long-term development.
Role in Peacebuilding and Community Relations
Drawing upon the longstanding principles reflected in Bayelsa State Government directives regarding the maintenance of peace and order among communities within Akassa Clan and surrounding areas, Ms. van der Merwe supports initiatives designed to promote dialogue, mutual understanding, and peaceful coexistence among neighbouring communities.
Her responsibilities include advising on governance structures that encourage lawful conflict resolution, supporting community-engagement processes, and assisting in the development of frameworks through which grievances may be addressed through recognized institutions and established administrative mechanisms.
She works closely with programme leadership, community stakeholders, development partners, and local institutions to strengthen confidence-building measures that contribute to social stability, community resilience, and sustainable development outcomes.
