The Revival of Akassa Community Bank (Nig.) Limited
A Legacy Institution for Coastal Infrastructure and Community Development
Akassa Community Bank (Nig.) Limited, RC 204963, established on 8 October 1992, was conceived as a community-focused financial institution dedicated to supporting local economic growth, infrastructure development, and indigenous enterprise within the coastal communities of present-day Akassa Local Government Area and the wider Brass region of Bayelsa State.
During its operational years, the bank contributed to the financing ecosystem that supported community development initiatives, marine transportation activities, dredging operations, shoreline protection projects, fisheries, and local business enterprises. These efforts were particularly significant during a period when coastal communities faced increasing environmental challenges, including shoreline erosion, flooding, and ocean encroachment.
Historical records from community leaders in Sangana highlighted the urgent need for sustainable coastal protection following the deterioration of shoreline defense infrastructure. These concerns underscored the importance of strong financial institutions capable of supporting long-term infrastructure investment and community resilience.
Today, there is an opportunity to revitalize the legacy of Akassa Community Bank through a modern development framework linked to the proposed UAC Bekekiri Jetty Development and Economic Corridor Initiative.
Proposed Transformation
The renewed institution would focus on:
- Coastal and marine infrastructure development
- Jetty rehabilitation and modernization
- Community investment and enterprise financing
- Fisheries and blue economy development
- Climate resilience and shoreline protection
- Maritime transportation services
- Youth entrepreneurship and employment programs
- Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) implementation
Strategic Vision
To transform a historic community banking institution into a catalyst for economic growth, infrastructure renewal, environmental sustainability, and community prosperity throughout Akassa, Sangana, and neighboring coastal communities.
Development Motto
“Preserving Heritage, Financing Progress, Building Coastal Resilience.
