Goal 3: Good Health and Well-Being

Advancing Healthcare Access and Community Wellness Across Akassa Clan

Good health is the foundation of every thriving society. Under the framework of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), Goal 3 focuses on ensuring healthy lives and promoting well-being for people of all ages. It emphasizes access to quality healthcare, maternal care, disease prevention, immunization, mental wellness, emergency response systems, and universal health coverage for vulnerable communities worldwide.

At the heart of the  UNDP Akassa LGA Space Platform is a commitment to transforming healthcare delivery throughout Akassa Clan, Brass L.G.A., and surrounding coastal communities in Bayelsa State. Through collaborative partnerships, community health awareness campaigns, healthcare infrastructure development, and strategic support initiatives, the platform seeks to bridge the healthcare gap affecting rural and riverine populations.

The establishment and promotion of community-based health centres, maternal healthcare services, immunization outreach, emergency care support, and preventive healthcare education remain critical priorities. Special attention is directed toward women, children, the elderly, and vulnerable groups who often face barriers to accessing affordable and quality medical services.

The Comprehensive Health Centre initiative in Bekekiri-Akassa reflects this vision by promoting consultation services, ante-natal care, immunization programmes, treatment for minor ailments, emergency healthcare response, and free treatment support for pregnant women and children under five years of age. These initiatives align directly with SDG Goal 3 targets aimed at reducing maternal mortality, ending preventable child deaths, combating infectious diseases, and improving universal healthcare access.

Healthcare is not only about hospitals and medicine. It also involves clean environments, safe drinking water, sanitation systems, nutrition, mental wellness, and sustainable public health education. The UNDP Akassa LGA Space Initiative recognizes that healthier communities create stronger economies, safer societies, and greater opportunities for sustainable development.

As Akassa continues to grow, the collective responsibility of government institutions, development agencies, healthcare professionals, private organizations, youth groups, and traditional leaders becomes increasingly important. Together, we can build resilient healthcare systems that guarantee dignity, protection, and hope for every member of the community.

Through partnership, innovation, and sustainable action, Goal 3 can become a reality for the people of Akassa — ensuring healthier lives, stronger families, and a brighter future for generations to come.
